DPD Netherlands consolidates competitive position with opening of new distribution centre in Eindhoven

State-of-the-art Eindhoven's "green sorter" hub will be an international hub for parcels from all around Europe

Best, 11 April 2019 – The Eindhoven region has this month gained a highly innovative distribution centre, allowing parcel service DPD Netherlands to consolidate its international competitive position. On 11 April DPD is opening Europe's largest international parcel sorting and distribution centre, the Eindhoven hub. The new site extends over 88,000 m2 and includes a sorting installation of over 2.1 kilometres in length, making DPD ready for the future and growth market. During phase two the site will expand by a further 36,000 m2.

DPD Netherland's innovative approach is evident throughout design. The hypermodern LS-4000 CB sorter, also known as the "green sorter", is the beating heart of the building. With a capacity of 50,000 parcels an hour it has all the flexibility required to deal with peaks in demand. The sorting process is fully automated, with many parcels spending only a couple of minutes in the building. The sorting machine's CO2 footprint is minimal and energy consumption is reduced by 75% thanks to the start/stop system, similar to the one used in modern cars.

Innovation and international growth

The new distribution centre's combination of functions offers many opportunities for the Netherlands and the rest of Europe, serving on the one hand as a depot for regional deliveries, and on the other hand as an international hub and transshipment location for large-scale transport operations. This will not only connect DPD with Rotterdam Mainport, Schiphol (with its customs clearance facilities) and the logistics hotspot Eindhoven, but it will also bring together European destinations within a radius of 800 kilometres, bringing next day deliveries within reach and benefiting both senders and recipients. In the event of a "No-deal Brexit", Eindhoven hub will also become a crucial hub, handling parcel volumes on their way to and from the United Kingdom, not only for the Netherlands but for the surrounding countries, extending as far as Poland. The entire customs procedure will be processed digitally for around 60,000 parcels per day.

Eindhoven region

The new distribution centre will improve the region's connections with the international logistics network. The market is expanding and the number of online purchases is strongly increasing. Days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday call for an international approach. Customers expect speed and flexibility, including same-day delivery, and that is what DPD makes possible from Eindhoven. All 500 employees from the current location will move to the new Eindhoven hub. The new location on the Westfields business park in Oirschot, located in the North-West of Eindhoven, also offers various upscaling options with a further expansion by 36,000 m2 anticipated in phase two.

"The new Eindhoven hub offers plenty of opportunities to grow along with the rising market demand. It allows us to respond even better to the needs of parcel senders and recipients and to quickly process peak volumes. The new distribution center is by far the largest hub in the DPD network and will play a crucial role in our international network in Europe. Therefore, Eindhoven hub will be fully in line with DPD's ambition to achieve sustainable growth in an innovative way.”

Eric Dietz, CEO of DPD Netherlands

Opening

The opening will not go unnoticed: the new distribution centre will be opened on 11 April by Minister Hugo de Jonge and world-class squash players Ali Farag and Nour El Sherbini. An international squash tournament will also take place during the opening week, the DPD Open, an initiative organised by the PSA. With a $200,000 prize pool for men and women, this tournament will be among the world's top ten largest squash events. The international squash world top will travel to Eindhoven and the event will be broadcast live in Europe via Eurosport Player, and in the rest of the world via Squash TV.
