DPD UK Unveils Game-Changer: The Ottobot Delivery Robot

Innovation 18 November 2024

DPD has taken yet again a significant leap into the future of parcel delivery by becoming the first company in the United Kingdom to deploy the revolutionary Ottobot, a multi-compartment, fully autonomous delivery robot from the company Ottonomy. This cutting-edge innovation is set to transform the way packages are delivered in urban environments.

Meet Ottobot !

Ottobot is not just any delivery robot; it's larger than DPD's previous models and boasts an impressive maximum payload of 70kg. With eight separate compartments, this robot can carry parcels of varying sizes and facilitate collections. This means fewer trips and increased efficiency for the delivery process.

Advanced Maneuverability

Equipped with a four-wheel powered swerve drive, independent steering and even suspension, the Ottobot is designed for maximum maneuverability. It utilises multiple sensors, including light detection and ranging (lidar) technology and high-definition cameras, along with advanced software that allows it to navigate even the most complex environments autonomously.

Launching in Milton Keynes

The Ottobot will make its debut in Milton Keynes, a city where DPD has successfully operated autonomous deliveries since July 2022 using Cartken robots. From its base at DPD's Knowlhill depot, the Ottobot will traverse the traffic-free Redway network, allowing it to reach nearby residential neighborhoods with ease.

Efficiency Redefined

With the capability to handle up to eight separate deliveries in one outing, the Ottobot is designed to maximize efficiency. It can also accommodate larger parcels in two spacious 38-liter compartments, making it a versatile addition to DPD's delivery fleet.

Seamless Delivery Experience

Once the Ottobot has mapped its surroundings, it operates entirely autonomously. Recipients will receive an SMS notification when the robot is at their doorstep, allowing them to use a secure one-time PIN code to unlock the compartments and collect parcels.

Stay Powered Up

The Ottobot runs long and strong with six hours of battery life. DPD has implemented a quick battery swapping system at the depot, ensuring that these robots can stay on the move and maintain their delivery schedules.

With the introduction of Ottobot, DPD is not only enhancing its delivery capabilities but also paving the way for a smarter and more efficient future in logistics. Keep an eye out for this innovative robot as it hits the streets!
